Hello! I'm Amy Eibel, your Brick Street Society Blogging Lady Boss.
I love old stuff. I love new stuff, too. Actually, I love the modern movement of making old stuff new again. I'm a mass of contradictions... but I think that's because this happy life of mine in the heart of the Rust Belt has made it so.
Growing up in Akron, Ohio, "The Rubber Capital," my experiences were shaped by a city of factories and work ethic, and a family of tire builders and teachers who worked incredibly hard to provide me a well-rounded world of industry AND culture.
Now I live and work in the region of a lovely neighboring Rust Belt city, Canton. My husband, Greg (a social studies teacher & my business partner), and I live near his family's large farm with our dog, Franklin, and our three cats, Cleopatra, Leonidas and Thomas Jefferson. We love to travel, hang out downtown, and go on new local and regional adventures together.
By day, I'm an art teacher. By nights, weekends and summers, I'm a small business owner, operating Little Chicago Clothing Co. where I design and screen print apparel and accessories inspired by Ohio, Canton and Rust Belt communities. I'm also one of four collaborators in Print & Press Shop & Studios, the combined printing studio and retail space in the Canton Arts District. Oh yeah, and I'm also a practicing artist creating works out of my studio, East Spartan Art.
Over the last two years, I've started along a quest of self-reflection about how to make positive changes in my life that could lead to greater balance, and in turn, greater happiness. This is definitely still a journey. Raised in northeast Ohio, my work ethic and elbow grease naturally operate on overdrive at all times, and that's a hard habit to break. I'm learning how to make better choices about the projects that I genuinely want to do, as opposed to blindly saying "yes" to work that I know will make for miserable and (mentally and physically) exhausting experiences.
So this blog - this is something I've always WANTED to do. I'm so passionate about the wonderful momentum that's revitalizing the Midwest/Great Lakes/Rust Belt region, and under that umbrella, the topics I where I hold most "expertise" and interest range from art to design to fashion. Things local, regional, and handmade are supremely alluring to me. And, my creative drive never rests... so, I figure, why not share some experiences, and find out who's with me?
